St Remy de Provence is a gem of a Provencal town nestling
deep in the French countryside, east of Arles, south of Avignon and
west of Salon de Provence. It's within an area of outstanding
natural beauty called Les Alpilles, with the walled town of St Remy
de Provence at its centre. The town stands on one of the oldest
archeological sites in Europe with the ancient settlement of Glanum
predating the Romans. St Remy is today a busy town of leafy
squares, cobbled streets and archways through which burst a dense
array of boutiques, gourmet restaurants, cafes and art galleries.
The painter Vincent Van Gogh loved the village and the surrounding
area which he featured in more than 150 of his works. Nearby other
Provencal villages merit a visit including the imposing white
stones of Les Baux de Provence, Maussane famous for its wineries
and the pretty villages of Mouries, Eygalieres and
Oppede.
