Map
Located at the confluence of the Rhone and Durance rivers,
Avignon, known by the nursery song 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon', (the
real life Pont Saint Benezet), is probably more famous for the
imposing Palais des Papes built when the papacy moved to Avignon in
the 14 century. Strategically situated high above the River Rhône
and encircled by medieval ramparts, Avignon's walled town is a
warren of cobbled streets, lantern-lit passageways and
architectural treasures. Bathed in the brilliant light of Provence,
this former papal enclave has long attracted artists as well as
those in search of cultural entertainment. Every summer Avignon
hosts the Festival of the Performing Arts at venues throughout the
city followed by the annual jazz festival in August. An area
dominated by the Rhone valley, this is serious wine growing country
with one of the most famous wine regions nearby,
Châteauneuf-du-Pape considered by many to be one of the finest of
the Côtes-du-Rhône appellations.
